About the Author
Deane is a retired teacher of English as an Additional Language. He taught in Turkey and Indonesia before returning to the UK where he taught in Bradford for 27 years. He says:
“My experiences living abroad opened my eyes to how we, in the developed world, have lost our connection to the earth and nature. We have exploited natural resources for too long with no consideration of the consequences. Our young people need to understand that we can all have an impact on our futures by being aware of our actions and living as responsibly as we can. The idea for the story appeared out of nowhere one morning. This time, instead of rolling over and going back to sleep, I got up and wrote it down.
“It is important for children to explore this issue at an early age because the future of the planet will be in their hands next.”

About the Illustrator
Becky Hodgson is a graphic designer and illustrator based in West Yorkshire, England. She graduated from Leeds College of Art in 2021 and her work has spanned design for interiors, children’s clothing and greetings cards. She says:
“When I was approached with the opportunity to bring Deane’s story to life, I just loved the important message it put across – the impact us humans have on our wonderful planet Earth. The story was packed full of imagery for me to illustrate, which I did with a combination of lots of hand painting and adding detail digitally. I hope children all over the world love this book as much as I loved illustrating it.”
